"I don't need a reason to help people."

What marks the beginning and end and connects our lives together? Within this shallow world and these short lives is there meaning and purpose from behind being born? The challenges Final Fantasy IX's characters face intertwine and weave beautifully together causing chain reactions of character development that almost 'trick' the player into realizing their similarities for all its subtly. Zidane Tribal is our main character, passionate under his carefree farce, often portraying himself as someone that just doesn't care -- the laid-back ladies man. It's not that Zidane seeks attention but enjoys entertaining, which go hand-in-hand with how he'd been raised; the clever thief that draws no attention and the actor that basks in admiration. Much like the actor, Zidane's emotions play with him... keeping those painful masks designed well. Finding that, even without all your answers, every single life is worth living.

Most of his personality is conveyed through his motivations; Zidane has and always will be somewhat of a meddler in other people's problems. The quote above is presented during the opening title screen cinema displaying pictures of characters – ‘Virtue’ being Zidane’s, “I don’t need a reason to help people.” He twists and turns and works himself into many situations, most of which have nothing that personally concerns him. These acts could be considered attention seeking, the pursuit of glory and adventure, but in reality Zidane mostly looks to fulfill this empty feeling. Over putting self-worth into what others think of him, he put self-worth into how useful he can be – making everything he does far more personally effective even when it includes someone else’s issues entirely. This use of people can make him come off a little rude or arrogant at times. Characters like Steiner or Amarant reflect that annoyance – seeing through the mask and assuming Zidane does things with selfish intent but he doesn’t quite meet the general opinion of why he acts. Normally accused with being on some devilish quest for Garnet’s affections or attempting to earn glory or power – again, not the reason.

Zidane often uses quotes from plays to emphasize himself, one in particular helps describes his motivations rather perfectly. Pulling this quote from Ipsen and a play based around his adventure to explain his reasoning behind helping and following Princess Garnet–

"Ipsen and his good friend Colin worked at a tavern in Treno. One Day, Ipsen got a letter. The letter was so wet from rain that most of the writing was illegible. The only part he could read said "Come back home." Nowdays, we have airships and stuff, but back then, it was really hard to travel. He didn't know why he had to go back, but he got some time off, gathered his things, and set out on his journey home."

He walked a thousand leagues through the Mist. Sometimes he was attacked by vicious monsters, but he made it, because his friend Colin was by his side. And then, after much time on the road... He had to ask Colin something. Why did you come with me?"

"Only because I wanted to go with you."

Reinforcing his feelings to Garnet with this particular play shows off Zidane’s current development and deep inside marks the climax between early game and endgame. How Zidane struts himself in early game feels almost conflicted, he’s unsure if these negative feelings will ever resolve themselves. The general explanation would be that he feels cut-off from the world and his life. He understands that he’ll always have somewhere he belongs with Tantalus, that is his family, but Zidane still longs to fill the void. Telling Princess Garnet this story – telling Dagger his feelings – marks the climax of Zidane’s character development, in my opinion. Unbeknownst to him, though an answer isn’t directly provided, he’s found a place where he belongs – where his pain can eventually fade and where he’ll find his answer. Those feelings for Garnet make this stepping stone in overcoming his own personal problems; he’s enjoying the emotional high she gives him. Eventually he learns this wonderful sense of belonging isn’t coming from romantic feelings, which in turn is why he learns to give Garnet that needed time and space (-despite having some serious dokis lbr). That security can come from anyone… He wants not only to have this feeling but provide it for her as well. I feel that’s what Zidane is attempting to portray, explaining why he’s happy being with her, though it’s about as far as most teenage boys go with deep emotional expression.

Some of his more negative personality traits start rearing their ugly head after learning this, however. When Garnet leaves to deal with rather seriously life issues, Zidane is stripped of his pacifier. Though he’s shown rather mature moments through the course of the game, being the voice of reason for many beforehand, Zidane finally experiences one really low form of entitlement. Around this time he’s under the impression that Garnet is who he needs to end these nasty problems – she dumped him so what’s the point in trying? He can’t have what he wants. Zidane claims he’s never felt this way about anyone before and because of his attraction, blames Garnet indirectly for not only ‘leaving him’ after experiencing whole-hearted worth but also these painful hurt fee-fees from being an unruly teenager in love. As previously stated though, he does learn the difference and because of that knowledge it becomes something valuable. That worth back at Madain Sari – their friendship – is far more important to him than his attraction, and if Garnet isn’t ready than Zidane will give her that time. Even if her answer is one day no, nothing could replace having known her and living his life knowing Garnet cares.

Others are affected by his hypocritical attitude around reserving help. While Zidane is quick to reassure and advise others like Vivi or Garnet he doesn’t take someone’s hand so freely himself. The biggest case of this is during the visit to planet Terra, where Zidane learns about his past and is extremely disappointed. The game cycles quickly though and metaphoric portrayal of depression, showing Zidane attempting to deal with everything by himself, lashing out against Garland and his friends and eventually accepting their assistance and taking the answer of-- I’ll find it one day, with my friends by my side. The way he deals with things is very different at the end of the game compared to the beginning and because of this the player should see a much happier Zidane.

These tests of character all come together to form Zidane’s values, believing that every life matters even if you’re not sure where you belong. Many of the characters within Final Fantasy IX mirror each other and Vivi mirrors Zidane, not in personality but in desire. Zidane aids Vivi on his quest to find purpose, desiring to have a place he belongs in this world. Everyone belongs somewhere and all life has purpose, this is something Zidane believes in, it’s just not everyone knows where they can find it. One of Zidane’s biggest mirrors almost reflects him perfectly – which is his brother, Kuja, and the main antagonist. If things had ended up differently, it could have easily been Zidane in Kuja’s position. He doesn’t believe he’s beyond doing something horrible or making terrible mistakes, seeming immature, selfish… In my opinion, because of the support Zidane has received from his friends, he’s only now strong enough to protect the things that matter. Saving Kuja at the end of the game shows sacrifice, Zidane is fulfilled and if he died tomorrow he wouldn’t be dying with regret – he hasn’t found his closure but he’s taking the right steps and this is one of them. Rescuing the Genomes on Terra also shows this… oddly enough he earned a family.

Ending this personality section with a few little things I couldn’t quite fit in – mostly addressing two things. How Zidane deals with people he doesn’t actually like and the mannerisms behind his tail. His dealings with Steiner at the beginning of the game show this first personality trait off rather well, for he doesn’t care for Steiner but Zidane’s pretty good at fudging any politeness shown (not that Rusty buys it). Another important character is Amarant, who plays like a precursor to how Zidane deals with Kuja -- ”The sly eagle doesn’t kill at whim.” Even if you’re super annoying or have done some horrible things, perhaps there’s meaning behind those actions that can justify. Zidane also believes some people are purely evil and he’s not against killing but characters like Amarant and Kuja don’t deserve to die. Another little thing would be his tail – its fun. Zidane often express himself using his tail inadvertently, curling and swaying with his emotions. Even being a PlayStation model, Zidane clearly has some expressive animations.

Zidane had never thought the day would come – I mean, he had taken many, many lovely women on dates before but never one so painfully and obviously younger than him. What he wasn't telling the audience was that Zidane didn’t return her romantic affections, and he wasn't about to reveal that to the very dramatic little girl. “Ladies first—"

Eiko was only six years old and very infatuated with her first boy-crush, Zidane was flattered… really! He didn’t know how it felt to be a little girl but he sure understood being lonely. Her growing attached to him, Dagger, and Vivi so quickly wasn’t that entirely bizarre. Our blue-haired unicorn girl didn’t need ten years of longing, Zidane was glad she came with them on their journey. “Lookin’ beautiful as ever today~” he threw on the charm, she had warned him that his usual flattery better come off top-notch, she didn't want to be treated like a child…. Well, at least not obviously treated like one. Our hero is no cradle robber; just our typical jewels, money, and objects of value-robber.

“Thank you!” her voice was chipper, like usual. Being escorted like this and getting private time with Zidane… sure, you could call it ‘romantic’ but getting selective time with Garnet too would mean all the same to her. It wasn’t about the crush or whatever. Sitting down when Zidane pulled her seat out for her she thought that perhaps she didn’t want his affections, she wanted a servant? That’s a thought.

He pushed in the tiny summoner’s chair with ease as Eiko was still very light, and sat across from her. He was taking her out for lunch, that’s not too romantic, but hopefully romantic enough to calm the whims of a growing woman. “Having fun? Nice bow, by the way… the light blue with polka dots really suits you.” Polka dots, that’s the level Zidane was at. There was a fine line between a woman and the shocking reality that your date can barely fit into her chair.

“Of course, that’s why I picked it!” she waved her finger at him critically, “Mog’s ribbon's right here, around my wrist today because—well, because I thought our date deserved light blue.” Her big round cheeks had her smile worn into them.

That… Zidane supported his chin against the table with his elbows, that was such a little girl-esque thing to say. He couldn’t keep up the facade much longer. They ordered lunch, Zidane orders some pizza and Eiko didn’t protest the idea of sharing. What means almost nothing to one person could mean the world to another, Zidane notices he’s being watched while he eats and pauses mid bite, “…?” glancing up, watching Eiko twirl her finger in her hair innocently. He had to question if Eiko’s actions were similar to his own when playing the flirting game. If – in reality – was he being just as annoyingly creepy and piling it on just as heavy with Dagger as Eiko did with him? The difference is that Eiko is an adorable, harmless, six year-old girl and he's some nasty, skeevy sixteen year-old boy man…

Maybe he shouldn’t think too hard on that one…
